Abstract
A model for cake filtration is presented where the cake and filter media resistance to the flow of molten Al are discussed and quantified. Filtration experiments were carried out using reticulated foam filter media with three different alloy melts: 1100, 5082, and 7075. Each alloy melt was processed to have "clean" and "contaminated" melts. The specific cake resistance for each of these melts was evaluated. An example problem is presented where such data are used to predict filter size requirements and the required aluminostatic head. 5 ref.--AA(US).
