Abstract
The recent development of smart structure provides a means to predict structural failure well in advance. A study is needed to investigate whether the embedded optical fiber affect the structural integrity of the composite. A finite element model, incorporated with averaging method on fiber/matrix properties, was employed to study the induced displacement distributions around the optical fiber in 3-D braided graphite/epoxy composites. Overall, the results show a local and small change in the displacement distribution, which will not affect the structural integrity.
