Analytic approach to the analysis of ridge and groove gap waveguides - Comparison of two methods

Abstract
This paper presents a comparison of two approaches applied in the analysis of ridge gap waveguides and recently introduced groove gap waveguides. The motivation for this comparison lies in the fact that full-wave solvers, typically employed to analyze electromagnetic structures, do not provide sufficient physical insight and require large computer resources. The first approach separates the structure into lateral regions, using modal field representation inside them and connecting the regions using mode matching. The second approach performs the analysis in the spectral domain in which the Green's functions of the considered structure are determined. The results obtained using both approaches are compared with results from a full-wave electromagnetic solver and they show very good agreement. Furthermore, the analysis is extremely fast compared to commercial solvers and it can be of great help in the first stages of the design process.
