Abstract
Atmospheric pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (AP-MALDI) coupled to quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometry (QIT) has been shown to be a powerful technique for the analysis of biomolecules such as peptides and oligosaccharides. The ion trap enables ion accumulation and multiple stage tandem mass spectrometric (MS exp n ) measurements to be readily recorded on complex analytes. This technique has been applied to the analysis of biomolecules including peptides and oligosaccharides, but the analysis of synthetic polymer species has received relatively little attention. In this work the application of AP-MALDI/QIT is reported for the analysis of polyethers and a hyperbranched polymer sample. AP-MALDI/QIT spectra are characterized by a high level of background chemical noise, much of which results from analyte/matrix adduct and fragment ion peaks, that are weak or absent in vacuum MALDI-TOF spectra.
