Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a common disorder especially seen on the onset of adulthood, affecting an estimated 80 – 90% of teenagers. The search for plant based remedies for the treatment of this disease has always been of interest to cosmetic science since the prolonged use of antibiotics has created a problem of antibiotic resistance amongst the acne inducing bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidemidis . Extracts of two varieties of genus Achillea viz. a cultivar A. millefolium 'Moonshine' and A. millefolium var. millefolium obtained from United States and India respectively were tested for their anti acne properties. Lowest Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) for the antimicrobial activity against the two acne causing organisms, P. acnes and S.epidermidis were established for extracts in different solvents. The MIC for petroleum ether extract of Moonshine variety against S. epidermidis and the ethyl acetate extract of millefolium variety against P.acnes were found to be the best. The petroleum ether extract of both varieties also showed potent free radical scavenging and anti tyrosinase activity which determines the ability to remove residual pigmentation on skin. Phytochemical screening of the most potent extract for both plants will be carried out for identification and characterization of anti-acne compounds present. These results will help to establish a comparative study of the anti acne potentials between the two plants and provide data on recommendations of a possible combination of the two varieties for a stronger anti-acne effect.
