Abstract
Abstract
We describe an undergraduate engineering project to give students hands-on experience and integrate diverse knowledge and skills in robotics, thermal imaging, rapid prototyping, machine learning and artificial intelligence, and plastics engineering, and materials testing. A robot is programmed for ultrasonic welding of 3D-printed or laser-machined plastic parts or soldering of components to printed circuit boards. The process is monitored with a thermal camera, and the infrared images and video are analyzed by machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms for process optimization, based on criteria tensile strength and pressure leak tests. A pre-trained machine learning model can monitor and analyze the thermal joining processes.
