Abstract
To establish an engineering basis for the design and selection of textile preforms for the forming of structural composites, a study was carried out to quantify the engineering parameters of fabric preforms with respect to the conformability of preforms. The stress-strain responses under various modes of deformation including tension, shear, and bending were measured at different strain levels in the warp, filling, and bias directions. The multiple regression analysis method was employed to analyze the data, and an empirical model which quantitatively relates the conformability index with the mechanical and structural properties of the preforms was developed. The model will serve as a basis to guide the selection of the preforms for composite applications. (Author)
