Abstract
This paper demonstrates the benefits of improved learning assessment in the academic curriculum by leveraging the lessons learned from the Opening Doors Program, a professional development grant, which uses a continuing and professional education (CPE) rubric. The CPE rubric is based on eight general standards for online course design. These general standards are founded on researched-based literature and best practices. The power of the rubric is the alignment of the general standards to enhance the quality of the learning outcomes. The use of a continuing and professional education rubric along with indirect and direct assessment techniques benefit the learning outcomes for both the academic curriculum and the Opening Doors Program. Opening Doors provides an opportunity to pilot these techniques at a quicker pace to enhance capacity building in the academic curriculum. At the conclusion of the paper, one will be able to (1) identify the general standards of the continuing and professional education rubric and align these general standards to improve measurable learning outcomes, (2) apply direct and indirect assessment techniques to measure the quality of learning outcomes and (3) develop mapping templates of learning outcomes to expedite capacity building in the academic curriculum.
