Abstract

STEM Education
STEM minority participation programs have been widely implemented in higher education institutions to diversify and expand the U.S. STEM workforce. Research highlights the potential of targeted exploration of STEM roles and careers, and of intentional reflection on the self in relation to STEM (identity exploration). This work examines how engagement in a federal-funded STEM minority participation program shaped these processes in current students and alumni. Epistemic Network Analysis visualized connections between inductive identity themes in interviews, highlighting differences between interviewees at different stages of their careers and identity work: students discussed action-taking as they explored less-certain possible future STEM roles, while alumni integrated more diverse and holistic identity facets when conceptualizing their futures. Results offer insights into the identity-related impacts of STEM minority participation programs and longer-term trajectories of minoritized students working toward STEM majors and careers.
