Abstract
In the age of accountability, assessing student learning is critically important. However, teachers often do not possess the skills necessary to develop and implement their own assessments of student knowledge that produce reliable and valid outcomes. Due to a recent change in state legislation, Ohio's (USA) public teachers are not required to create and implement comprehensive assessment that measure student growth. To help Ohio teachers refine their classroom assessment skills, our team has developed a hands-on workshop type approach to guide practicing teachers through the process of developing assessments of student learning and growth. Our work with more than 800 teachers and administrators has shown to be successful in that teachers are more confident regarding their assessment development skills, use critical eyes with assessments developed by outside sources, and are able to share their understanding of assessment development with peers.
