Abstract
The study investigates the effects of Cognitive Flexibility Theory (CFT) by examining a framework for conceptualizing, developing, delivering, and assessing variables that emerged in a search for suitable solutions to prepare teacher educator faculty in new technologies, communications, and virtual pedagogy. The research was designed to focus more on the effects of cognition with media (teacher educators' understanding) and application of technology with pedagogy (understanding in educational practice) by following training efforts, rather than on the results of technology itself. Four variables (cognition, media, technology and pedagogy) are examined via artifacts, interviews, observations of time on task, and video captures. A significant finding was that although participants increased their use of technology considerably in their teaching methodology, and their confidence and levels of understanding increased dramatically, their skill sets remained fairly stagnant. One conclusion is that after being provided sustained access and interaction through research media, mentoring, coaching, and technology skills training, some faculty ultimately felt greater control for decision-making about their use of technology personally, as an educator, and for their students.
