Hygrothermal Evaluation and Occupancy Impact in Three Stone Historic Churches Across Diverse Climate Zones during the Cooling Season

Abstract
This study investigates the impact of occupancy on indoor environmental conditions in three historic religious buildings located in different climate zones. In particular, Mission San Jose and Saydet Zgharta churches, with mechanical air conditioning, and Saint George Cathedral, with natural ventilation, were investigated. Environmental monitoring campaigns were conducted to collect data on indoor/outdoor air temperature and relative humidity, CO2 levels, and occupancy patterns. The results indicate that occupancy has a significant impact on indoor conditions, with the higher effect observed in Saint George Cathedral. During periods of high occupancy (mass services), HVAC systems installed in San Jose and Saydet Zgharta churches lowered temperature and humidity; however, these environmental variables increased in Saint George Cathedral. CO2 concentrations were higher during high occupancy, but Saint George Cathedral had lower peaks, indicating ventilation's importance. The findings highlight the complex relationship between occupancy, cooling, and ventilation in historic buildings, informing conservation and comfort strategies.
