Interaction between O/sub 2/-Hb kinetics and the Fahraeus effect

Abstract
The influence of O/sub 2/-Hb kinetics and the Fahraeus effect on gas transport in the microcirculation was investigated in the steady state using a multicompartmental model for O/sub 2/-CO/sub 2/ coupled transport in the cat brain microcirculation. Results suggest that the influence of O/sub 2/-Hb reaction kinetics on oxygen transport is characterized by two major features: the difference-at the same Po/sub 2/-between the actual capillary O/sub 2/-Hb saturation and the equilibrium O/sub 2/-Hb saturation, and an increase in the value of venous Po/sub 2/ predicted by the model. The Fahraeus effect results in a Po/sub 2/ increase in the vein and venules and a Po/sub 2/ decrease in the tissue and arterioles. The two mechanisms enhance each other. Their interaction is more significant during ischemia.
