Abstract
We envision that intelligent bridges of the future will have sensors that will monitor structural condition, and alert officials in case the reliability of a bridge is reduced to an unacceptable level. The writers have been conducting research in conjunction with many academic, government, and industry partners to fully understand the technical issues that have to be resolved before we can actually have self-monitoring bridges. This paper summarizes the intertwined structural, electrical, and computer engineering related issues which the writers have identified as necessary for the development of such systems. Progress on addressing these issues is also described.
