Abstract

Moments of breakdown in any infrastructure make the often-invisible components visible (Star, 1999). In this paper, we explore how the breakdown of one physical computing system used in middle and high school classrooms (the DaSH) made determinant the sociotechnical infrastructure undergirding it. Using ethnography and situational analysis mapping, we make meaning of two major sources of the issue that became barriers to the system operating in teachers’ classrooms: shifting organizational goals & the cloud-based component of the programming environment. Uncovering these sunk components of the computing technologies infrastructure offers insight into what to consider when researching and implementing work with physical computing in K-12 and out of school environments including what large-scale relationships it relies on and how they shape students’ relations to computing.
