Abstract
The removal of inclusions from an Al melt usually involves four basic separation processes: sedimentation, floatation, cake mode filtration and deep bed filtration. Each of the techniques are examined, with an in-depth treatment of cake mode and deep bed filtration. An analytical expression is derived that relates operating parameters of constant volume cake mode filters to performance and a method of interpreting experimentally obtained constant pressure filtration data is presented. A kinetic expression is also applied to a finite element deep bed filter to demonstrate short-term behavior. 23 ref.--AA.
