Abstract
Annealing processes after deformation can be either heterogeneous or homogeneous. Primary recrystallization and abnormal grain coarsening are heterogeneous processes and so require two distinct mechanisms: nucleation and growth. while recovery and normal grain coarsening are homogeneous and do not require a separate nucleation step. In recrystallization of deformed materials. "nucleation" is fundamentally different from the process of nucleation in phase transformations. such as solidification or where a new crystal structure must form. as in precipitation. In a deformed metal. the crystal structure. though distorted, is retained. so "nucleation" of a "new" grain only requires the preferential growth of an existing region. a "sub-grain" of the deformed structure. The paper reviews (i) nucleation mechanisms in primary recrystallization. (ii) the problem of making this knowledge predictive. (iii) and finally recent examples apparently in conflict with the orthodox view.
