On the State Requiring a Test of Marriage Readiness
Society for the Study of Social Problems
01 Jan 1980
Abstract
At present the 50 states ask only a health, eligibility, & age requirement of marriage license seekers. It is proposed that they also be tested on their knowledge of marriage realities, such as relevant laws, available aids (eg, counseling), & trends (age at first marriage, first childbirth, etc). This "test" could be both optional & only for the couple's private use, or could be mandatory & used to deny approval until successfully passed. Pros & cons, & sample test items are explored.
