Organized Labor's Leaders and Followers: On the Urgent Need for a Better Model
Society for the Study of Social Problems
01 Jan 1982
Abstract
Two models of US union realities -- the "business union" & the "social union" -- are compared & contrasted to explicate strengths & weaknesses of each. A third model -- "postindustrial unionism" -- is developed from a discussion of the steadily emerging influence of women workers, older workers, & nonwhite workers. Given the advocacy politics of new caucuses of duespayers, & the rising interest in entitlements of a nonpecuniary nature, the US labor movement is challenged to empower its rank-&-file as never before.
