Interviews with top officials of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers' Union (PATCO) are utilized, along with 4 surveys of 14,500 PATCO members conducted in the year preceding the 1981 strike, to draw attention to the causes of the labor action, as perceived by leaders & followers alike. After exploring the consequences of the strike for all concerned, discussion focuses on the sociopolitical implications of this type of governmental response to a union action.
