Abstract
In this paper in a symposium celebrating the contributions of Dr Jim Staley, two topics will be dealt with. Firstly the contributions of Dr Staley to the knowledge base of the subject of aging will be briefly described. These studies were all carried out in the development of improved Aluminum alloys for the use by Alcoa's customers. Although scientific insight was sought by Jim in this, as in his other efforts, - the aim was always improved performance. It seems likely that by this means, more insight and certainly better performance was achieved than if the aim had been understanding with the hope of subsequent application. That is Jim was and still is an Engineer not an Applied Scientist. The later part of the paper, reflects a different viewpoint, that of the author, who is certainly more an applied scientist than an engineer. Here the paper will attempt to describe some of the more interesting of the many important aspects of the subject The aim is to illustrate what remains unknown known eve though it should be capable of being understood.
