Abstract
The paper intends to provide an overview of the multifaceted issues affecting the preservation of historic operating bridges starting from the complex federal, state and local policies regulating public infrastructure financing and revenue mechanisms, infrastructure condition evaluation, preservation and renewal engineering and infrastructure asset management.
Several bridge owners and stakeholders are today facing severe challenges that require to formulate complex strategies for the sustainable preservation and asset management of operating historic landmark bridges in urban regions. An integral part of these strategies include the complexities of publicly financed proactive as opposed to remedial maintenance and innovative policies and engineering strategies requiring to leverage the potential of advanced technologies for the preservation and maintenance of operating historic landmark bridges.
