Abstract
A test device, herein referred to as a dynamic pullout test device, was developed for evaluating the pullout response of geogrids subjected to impact loading conditions. A series of impact pullout tests was performed on a PVC coated polyester geogrid embedded in sand using the dynamic pullout test device. In addition, a series of static pullout tests was performed on the same PVC coated polyester geogrid under similar confining conditions. In this paper, the results of the impact pullout tests are compared with those of the static pullout tests to quantify the difference between the impact and static pullout responses of the geogrid. The comparison indicates that: (i) the impact and static pullout resistance for the PVC coated polyester geogrid are approximately the same when the geogrid is confined under low normal stresses and (ii) the rupture strength of the PVC coated polyester geogrid in confined impact loading is higher than that from confined static loading when the geogrid is confined under a high normal stress.
