Abstract
The present paper deals with the seismic performance of RC bridge piers under severe earthquake. The method is proposed for estimating their seismic performance by the redundancy factor, i.e., the index determining their safety level. This is given by the ratio of the restoring strength of RC bridge piers designed by the seismic regulation to the applied earthquake strength. The possessing resistance strength and displacement of RC bridge piers under specified or unexpected earthquake are obtained by the static push-over analysis considering with their elastic-plastic behavior. The seismic performance of RC bridge piers can be quantitatively shown by numerical computation.
The above-mentioned redundancy factor of existing RC bridge piers can be applied at their risk and crisis managements for providing the unexpected disaster. Their damage situation is imaged using the redundancy factor determined for severe earthquake with various strengths. Before the severe disaster, their maintenance scheduling will be planned each time, considering the state during unexpected earthquake. After severe disaster, their damaged state will be predicted without inspection on site, referring to the seismic resistance strength of RC bridge piers. Some urgent transportation highways can be easily nominated among many highway networks by this management method. Moreover, for repair planning, by measuring the residual deformation on site after earthquake, the damage state of RC bridge piers is found referring to the redundancy factor, and a quick ex post facto can be done.
