Abstract
Among the important microstructural parameters that determine whether a material is suitable for thixoforming are: (i) adequate volume fraction of liquid, (ii) near equiaxed morphology of the solid grains, and (iii) minimum entrapped liquid. In this paper we discuss the need for low sensitivity of the volume fraction of solid with respect to minor temperature variations as a prerequisite for processability in the semisolid state. In addition we propose that it is possible to enhance the processability of some alloys using microsegregated material.
