Abstract
The reasons why coating method can prevent the formation of pyrochlore phase in one-step calcination of perovskite phase PMN powders were studied. Using x-ray diffraction, DTA, and emission analysis, it was found that several reactions occurred during the calcination before 500degreesC. These reactions produce small pyrochlore phase particles. The small pyrochlore particles and the well mixing of chemical species provided by the coating method decreases the diffusion distance necessary for the transformation reaction from pyrochlore to perovskite phase.
