Sustainable Traffic Management: A Framework Utilizing Energy Consumption Patterns

Abstract
The increasing number of vehicles on roads has reduced mobility, increased energy consumption, and emphasized environmental concerns. Especially in congested urban areas, vehicles tend to consume more gasoline and emit higher levels of pollutants. In this research, we introduce a traffic signal control system that utilizes vehicle energy consumption and emission data. Our primary objective is effectively balance and reduce vehicle energy consumption and emissions at signalized inter-sections while ensuring equitable allocation of resources (such as green time) among different vehicle types. Specifically, the system collects vehicle energy consumption and emission data through sensors installed on vehicles, which transfer this information to the control center as the input. The control center outputs signal timing plans based on resource allocation algorithms. Simulation experiments have demonstrated that our proposed method can significantly reduce both energy consumption and emissions simultaneously.
