Abstract
A focus on the healthy residential interior and the urban environment is the area in which this emerging form of teaching methodology operates. Under a research-driven collaborative mentorship based approach, this lab works to build human centered/design thinking processes, interior materials, visualization and advances in building science within the urban home for health. The work discussed here synthesizes science, design and architecture. This paper will examine group driven design research, and trans-disciplinary collaboration at the center of new works and ideas in the built environment, building on interdisciplinary research courses, summer lab sessions and brainstorming centered on health. User centered and human centered problem solving and sustainability are examined. The professors are part of an emerging center for health in the designed environment-and have had the opportunity to develop novel approaches to human issues and the designed environment. This synthesized and cross-disciplinary teaching method has developed to encompass opportunities for trans-disciplinary technology, health and design based research. The exploration described here will include a set of new practices and perspectives for collaboration with a range of students, disciplines and methodologies. The work includes the description of project-based learning, design thinking, human centered design and informed design teaching to a diverse set of students at many levels and from many disciplines.
