The Drexel/UPenn IGERT: Creating a new model for graduate education in nanotechnology
PROCEEDINGS OF THE FORUM ON MATERIALS EDUCATION AND RESEARCH, pp.147-152
01 Jan 2004
Abstract
Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania, both located in Philadelphia, have co-created an Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) in the area of nanoscale science and engineering. The goal of this program is to develop a new model for interdisciplinary education at the PhD level. The program is designed to prepare American PhD students for careers in the multi-disciplinary fields of nanoscale science and engineering. A key effort of the Drexel/Penn IGERT program is to give students the opportunity to do research in labs outside of the U.S. The importance of international research and cooperation to the success of this program in particular, and nanotechnology in general, is discussed. Additional information about the IGERT program can be found at http:// nano.materials.drexel.edu/igert.html.
