The Early Electronic Digital Computers - Panel Summary
Proceedings : annual International Computer Software and Applications Conference, pp 868-870
07 Jul 2026
Abstract
The main goal of this panel at IEEE COMPSAC 2026 is to review the first projects for building electronic digital computers during the first half of the 20th century. The presented timeline shows that back in October 1939 the first breadboard proof-of-concept prototype of an electronic digital computer became operational. The credit for this revolutionary invention goes to John Vincent Atanasoff at Iowa State College. During the Second World War, two other groundbreaking projects - the Colossus and the ENIAC - were also completed between 1943 and 1945. The panel discussion will recognize the contributions of these early projects for the invention and early development of electronic digital computing and computers that changed the world.
