We investigate the toxicity of non-thermal plasma treatment on endothelial cells. This research explores the effect of non-thermal plasma on the vasculature, which is affected during plasma treatment of many tissues. Porcine aortic endothelial cells were seeded in vitro on 18 mm diameter cover glasses in 12 well plates near confluence. Cells were cultured for at least 24 hours prior to plasma treatment. Treated cells were quantified using a Coulter counter at 3 and 24 hours after plasma treatment. Initial results indicate that non-thermal plasma is relatively non-toxic to endothelial cells at short exposure times up to 30 s, while non-thermal plasma treatment at longer exposure times is cytotoxic.
