Abstract
Educating students is a walk along the fine line of what students know, what they think they know and what they do not know. Transforming structure is a pedagogical method that shows students real, tangible structures they have never seen before, requires they discover unique structural strategies, and provides them with a method to reinvent anew based on new discoveries. The objective is to provide the student with an in-depth understanding of analytical and numerical modeling of structural systems for design by integrating design studio tools with physical and analytical modeling techniques to design challenging structural forms. There are three aspects to transforming structure: 1) structural (re)production, 2) metaphorical construction process and 3) analytical and numerical modeling. The students then use this knowledge to project new structural possibilities. To follow is a discussion of the metaphorical construction process as a way of understanding the pedagogy of transforming structure.
