Police-Reported Homicides in at the Municipality Level in Bogota, Colombia, 2010-2024
2025
Abstract
This dataset is part of the ESCALA (Study of Urban Health and Climate Change in Informal Settlements in Latin America) project that was funded by the Lacuna Fund of the Meridian Institute https://lacunafund.org/.
This dataset contains homicides reported by police in Bogotá, 2010-2024, for the entire municipality, including details about the type of weapon used, date of the incident, victim demographics (gender and age group), and the number of victims. Data were provided by the Statistical, Criminal, Contraventional, and Operational
Information System (SIEDCO). The dataset may include (1) missing or incomplete entries for specific dates or municipalities due to underreporting, (2) potential inconsistencies in victim demographic data (e.g., unknown sex or age), (3) misclassification or underreporting of weapons used in the homicide incidents, and (4) incorrect homicide count. Preprocessing steps included (1) ensuring consistency of municipal names and IDs using official geographic codes, (2) assigning NA values for missing demographic details, (3) validating weapon types against the official domain table, and (4) verifying the accuracy of date-related variables (year, month, day) for each incident.
