Abstract
Table 3. Adult plumage colour variation in the C. [fuscater] complex based on specimens in the ANSP, DMNH, FMNH, and LSUMZ. Numbers taken from Smithe (1975) denote colours on the crown, back, undertail coverts (tl-covs), flanks, breast, and throat. ‘Chin’ is scored with two levels (0,1) referring to the absence or presence, respectively, of an unbroken (although sometimes faint) line of darker feathers connecting the malar regions across the chin. Specimens from southern Ecuador and north-western Peru (C. [f.] caniceps) were scored separately from north-western Ecuador (C. [f.] berlepschi), despite showing low genetic divergence, to illustrate plumage colour differences. Specimens from eastern Panama (C. [f.] mirabilis, Undescribed 1) were scored using non-fresh (faded) specimens (see text). Color scores from a ‘brown type’ unsexed specimen of C. [f.] fuscater, the only study skin of that taxon available for the formal analysis, are included below as ‘female’.
