A Modified Delphi Study to Establish Essential Clinical Pharmacology Competencies

Abstract
Background: Competency based education has been used to enhance the healthcare workforce for quite some time. Clinical Pharmacology is a translational discipline that is the integral to drug development. As such it is essential that the clinical pharmacology workforce is adequately equipped to address the demands of emerging trends. The purpose of this study was to determine the most significant competencies needed for a clinical pharmacologist in the regulatory environment. Methods: A modified Delphi method was administered to twenty-nine participants within a regulatory scientific government agency in Silver Spring, MD. An electronic survey was administered to participants in two rounds to gain consensus about essential clinical pharmacology competencies. A McNemar Change Test was performed to analyze data. Results: Participants ranked all of the core and technical competencies as essential with consensus of at least 60%. Conclusion: The Delphi technique is a suitable approach to determine essential competencies in clinical pharmacology because it gains valuable insight and cultivates agreement from regulatory experts who are at the forefront of drug development. Competencies can prepare the workforce to handle the emerging landscape of drug development thus advancing public health.
