Abstract

The organizational impacts of technology and introducing a generation to the workforce born in the digital age have been challenging to understand due to the novelty of the phenomenon. There is limited research that has pursued a dialogue with Generation Z about how their digital knowledge and skills are recognized and valued by their employers. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore Generation Z's perceptions about the value of their digital knowledge and skills in a selected health services organization. This study explored the central research question of how Generation Z perceives the value of their digital knowledge and skills and the connection to professional development offered by technology development employees in a selected health services organization. The study also addressed the sub-questions related to how technology development program employees describe the value of Generation Z's digital skills and expertise in the growth of the organization and the efforts put forth by those employees to recruit and retain Generation Z during early years of employment. The researcher applied a qualitative case study design aimed at gaining insight into the lived experiences of Generation Z and technology development program employees and how they perceive digital knowledge and skills to be valued in a professional environment. The population in this study was comprised of eight Generation Z employees and six technology development program employees. In-depth one-on-one interviews, guided focus groups and artifact analysis were utilized to discover patterns and themes that tie directly to the research questions and purpose. The significant findings and results gathered through the voices and lived experiences of the 14 participants provided evidence that proactive leadership, an emphasis on innovation, and transformative practices in human resources, must now encompass a technical lens in order to support organizational growth and success. The Generation Z and technology development program participants collectively embodied the organization's commitment to advance and support the development and distribution of digital knowledge and skills.
