Abstract

Civic engagement Collective action Community Small Business
This dissertation investigates the relationship between entrepreneurship and the community, with social capital as an important linkage among all three studies. Using both quantitative archival data and qualitative fieldwork data, this dissertation explores how community social capital can impact entrepreneurial actions at an individual level, and how the community social capital is generated and consumed in a broader social system to facilitate collective action. This dissertation maintains that community social capital can have a socio-psychological benefit on entrepreneurial actions, and in a broader social system, community social capital can be generated and strengthened through social interaction and social integration. Moreover, such social capital can facilitate local collective action for community development and improvement, such as a safer and more vibrant local neighborhood.
