Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness, namely the success and failure rate, of varying alternative educational opportunities for high school students in Pennsylvania, and more specifically, Central Pennsylvania. Alternative educational programming are educational opportunities and environments that offer historically non-traditional options to pursue individual credit requirements as set by each school district. Differentiated and flexible learning environments will help to contribute to individual learning objectives, and pending the pillars of the programming, there could be a greater sense of belonging and involvement as individual students grow. By utilizing a multi-site case study approach, the findings and research point towards a variety of alternative educational options for high schools in Central Pennsylvania. This study intended to answer the following questions: To what extent are different types of alternative educational programs offered to students attending high school in Central Pennsylvania? Which components of alternative educational programming can be identified as most effective? What are the outcomes for students who participate in alternative educational programming? These questions were investigated using structured interviews and survey questioning. The researcher sought detailed characteristics and opportunities of alternative educational programming and the potential outcome possibilities for students participating in alternative educational programming. Through evaluating alternative educational programming in Central Pennsylvania, there was a plethora of opportunities that both existed and challenged students outside of traditional educational programming in high school.
