Abstract

Sports administration Education, Secondary Athletic departments Athletic directors New York (State)--New York Metropolitan Area High school athletes Private Schools Strategic Planning
Athletic Directors of private high schools in the New York metropolitan area find themselves competing against one another not just on the field, but also in the recruitment of student athletes. With the shift in priorities for young individuals, athletic directors now must recognize the key components of attraction, while also understanding that change within their department is a necessity. The purpose of this phenomenological study sought to explore the lived experiences of private high school athletic directors within the New York metropolitan area. The aim of this study was to understand effective initiatives athletic directors have employed to develop premier athletic departments with an authentic brand that has led to successful recruitment of potential student athletes. The primary research question that will guide this study is, "What is the essence of the lived experiences of private high school athletic directors in the New York metropolitan area in branding their athletic departments? To further guide the research, the researcher will pose the following: (a) What are the participants' experiences in marketing their facilities to the general public? (b) What are the participants' experiences in using social media within their world of athletics? (c) What are the participants' experiences in hiring decisions that reflect the inclusion of men and women from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds aligning with the diversity of student athletes? The researcher employed a social constructivist perspective, as well as a conceptual framework based on three streams of research, practice, and theory, which include athletic facilities, social media implementation and integration, and diversity of a coaching staff.
