Abstract
Clinical Psychology Psychology
This dissertation is structured to begin placing the research related to musical development into a model that integrates musical research with accepted models of early child development. Using the work of Anna Freud, Margaret Mahler, Jean Piaget and Paul Kegan, emphasis is placed on current theories of psychosexual development and on the constructive-developmental models. The interpersonal model, created by Daniel Stern, is also included to emphasize further preverbal psychology and its importance in musical development. These models are used as a framework for illustrating when milestones in music development occur relative to other developmental events. Following the integration of the research in music and child development, the author examines what the implications are for each element of musical development relative to when it occurs and the known parameters of each developmental period. A model for musical development created by the author is then presented. Application of the model to clinical assessment and treatment is discussed.
