Abstract
Grants administration Research administration Research administrators Research enterprise
The federal government alone expends billions of dollars per year in research grants and contracts, while state agencies, philanthropic foundations, and corporations are not far behind. Research administrators are tasked with adhering to and monitoring a monolith of compliance and regulatory expectations that come along with these funds and often these roles and responsibilities are completely misunderstood and even a forgotten component of the institution. Further, many faculty and staff may not even know what research administration is or what a research administrator does, and how their services can support their research and relieve administrative burden. In this qualitative thematic study, the focus is to identify the ways in which the City University of New York, the nation's largest urban public institution of higher education, allocates resources to research administration, supports faculty in the research enterprise and provides support for research administrators through professional development.
