Abstract
In three essays I discuss how music prompts active engagement from consumers. The first essay is a conceptual model of consumer engagement with music, which includes autobiographical music experiences and centralizes the construct of psychological ownership to capture consumer feelings that music is "theirs." The second essay empirically tests how psychological ownership may impact consumer sharing behaviors and word-of-mouth for "their" music when such music is co-opted by brands. The third essay investigates the effects of music being used by brands in corporate sociopolitical activism (CSA) messaging. In four studies we examine the links between the music played, the emotions elicited by the music, the cognitive flexibility exhibited in response to the issue, and the consumer agreement with the brand stance. Together, these three essays add to the literature by iterating several complex antecedents of consumer music processing, such as psychological ownership for the music. These essays explore much broader outcomes due to brand use of music than have yet been addressed in the marketing literature. These include the potential for brand use of music to prompt reactions related to the music itself, outcomes related to identities individuals hold or wish to hold, and outcomes related to opinions on divisive sociopolitical issues.
