Abstract
This quantitative study explored awareness of brain-based pedagogical strategies and neuromyths among community college instructors, and how awareness may affect instructional practice. Additionally, the study aimed to investigate any relationship between professional development and awareness of pedagogical strategies and neuromyths among community college instructors. Forty-three community college instructors from two institutions of higher education took a survey. Qualitative results demonstrated a variability in accuracy in both neuromyths and general statements about the brain and general statements about the learning sciences and MBE Science. Misconceptions and uneven knowledge are broadly distributed rather than concentrated within particular educator profiles or contexts. Professional development was positively associated with a stronger awareness of neuromyths and brain-based pedagogical practices. Participants endorsed neuroscience-informed content as both interesting and useful for teaching, course development, and professional learning. Findings suggest that educators are eager for brain / learning content, that variability in baseline knowledge is substantial and widespread, and that teaching-focused professional development appears especially promising for improving accuracy and awareness. Keywords: brain-based pedagogical strategies, neuromyths, the learning sciences, MBE Science.
