Abstract
¡Apoyo! Exploring How Support Shapes the Latinx Experience around College and Career Readiness in an Urban School: A Phenomenological Study Sandy G. Mason, Ed. D. Drexel University, December 2023 Chairperson: Vera J. Lee, Ed. D. The focus of this phenomenological study explored how school and family supports shape the Latinx experience around college and career readiness in an urban high school. This study explored how Latinx secondary school students described their experiences with the implementation of targeted supports for college and career readiness within their urban high school environment. The questions are intended to assist educators, school leaders, and community members in gaining a more profound understanding about the lived experiences of Latinx students as these students prepare for college and career paths. The following research questions were explored in the study: 1. How have language acquisition and immigration experiences influenced the academic achievement of Latinx students in urban schools? 2. How do families support and serve the needs of their Latinx children as they prepare for college and a career? 3. How do urban high schools support Latinx students with college and career readiness? (a) What kinds of school resources and programs are available for Latinx students to prepare them for college and/or career opportunities? (b) What kinds of community resources and programs are available for Latinx students to prepare them for college and/or career opportunities? This study recruited a targeted sample of 10 self-identified Latinx high school students ages 16-21 born outside of the United States or whose parents were born outside of the US. The study also included the parent, parental figure, or legal guardian of the student participants. Data was collected through one-on-one semi-structured interviews, student participant photovoice journals, along with service and resource artifacts from the study site. Upon analysis of collected data, which was coded and categorized by themes, the key findings helped to inform the existing support trends that impact or are necessary to maximize the preparation of Latinx students for college and career readiness and recommended next steps.
