Abstract

Minority women New Orleans P-20 Philadelphia Leadership in minority women Education
Persistent and systemic inequality and discrimination continue for women with intersecting identities in educational leadership across the United States. Employing an intersectional feminist framework, this study provides a deeper understanding of the experiences of minoritized women educational leaders in senior level roles in Philadelphia, PA and New Orleans, LA. Using a narrative inquiry merged with a multiple intrinsic case study design, this study addresses gaps in literature focusing on the experiences of minoritized women in P-20 educational leadership through restorying and counter narratives, allowing for the narratives of individual women to be amplified to shed light onto the continued gender and non-dominant inequities within educational institutions. Participants' pathways and narratives were shared through graphic narrative participant profiles to highlight the complexities of their identities, the non-linear pathways, and agency. The narratives demonstrated the challenges they encountered of discrimination, pressure to perform, tokenism, and lack of professional networks. They also provided insights into how these women navigated these challenges including perseverance, authenticity, audacity, playing the game, and the assistance of allies and advocates. Individual case studies of Philadelphia and New Orleans were presented focusing on the sociocultural, political, educational contexts of each space and how it may have impacted experiences of participants. Implications and calls to action are provided for P-20 educational institutions, individual allies, advocates, and women educational leaders, as well as recommendations for future research.
