Abstract
This scholarly project comprises a scoping literature review to understand the challenges faced by individuals with intellectual disabilities (PID) in accessing sexual and reproductive healthcare, and to propose a novel conceptual framework for overcoming these challenges. The scoping review identifies the themes of risk of harm, educational knowledge gaps, self-control, intimacy, relationships, and support systems as the central areas identified in the literature. The research identifies significant disparities in healthcare access and quality for PID compared to non-disabled individuals, highlighting the need for improved educational and support structures. To address this, it advocates for a more inclusive and person-centered approach to healthcare, emphasizing the importance of respecting the autonomy and decision-making capacity of PID in the context of their sexual and reproductive health.
