Abstract

Weight loss--Psychological aspects Food habits
Meal planning during behavioral weight loss (BWL) may help participants enact changes in eating, such as following a healthier diet and reducing calorie intake, yet little is known about the extent to which participants utilize meal planning during BWL. The direct impact of meal planning on weight loss is also unclear. The current sub-study examined meal planning strategy use among adults with overweight and obesity (N = 61) enrolled in a parent trial of group-based BWL. Participants completed a meal planning questionnaire at Weeks 0, 6, 13, and 24. Body mass index (BMI) and dietary quality were measured at Weeks 0 and 24. Frequency of meal and calorie planning during treatment and barriers to planning strategy use were explored. Growth curve models were used to identify trajectories of meal and calorie planning frequency and test whether planning frequency across 24 weeks (between-person effects) or individual variation in meal planning at each timepoint (within-person effects) are associated with change in BMI and dietary quality during treatment. Results indicated that meal and calorie planning frequency increased more rapidly at the beginning of treatment with growth slowing over time. A within-person effect was observed for meal planning frequency in the prediction of BMI, whereas between-person effects were observed for meal planning predicting dietary quality, and for calorie planning predicting BMI and dietary quality. Clinicians in BWL should consider emphasizing the importance of consistent and frequent engagement in meal and calorie planning during treatment.
