Coaching for nursing students: curriculum to competency

Abstract
Background: Effective coaching practices generate confidence and competence in student learners. The facilitation of coaching efficacy improves students' understanding of curriculum learning objectives and outcomes. This quality improvement project informed coaching recommendations for the Good Life Model program, a research-practice initiative. Problem: A lack of knowledge contributes to poor learner outcomes. Coaching contributes to student confidence and competence acquisition for the development of an evidence-based Coaching Map. Purpose: This project's aim was to evaluate the literature and develop an evidence-based Coaching Map. Learner outcomes are dramatically improved when the foundation of a course integrates teaching with coaching methods. Methods: Nine content experts in education, nursing, academic innovation, and the topics of coaching and competency reviewed the evidence-based Coaching Map. The content experts provided feedback by completing the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool for Printable Materials (PEMAT-P) of the evidence-based Coaching Map. Results/Implications: The content experts' responses indicated a mean score of 91% for understandability (standard deviation = 0.28) and 94% for actionability (standard deviation = 0.23) of the CLEAR (Create, Learn, Engage, Apply, Reflect) evidence-based Coaching Map. Suggested revisions from the respondents' expertise provided feedback to consider for improving the evidence-based Coaching Map. These results generated recommendations for an executive presentation for the professionals and stakeholders of the Good Life Model program. The results suggest that the next steps in future iterations should be investigated to advance and sustain the CLEAR evidence-based Coaching Map.
