The research effort documented impulsive and explosive behaviors in children diagnosed with complex partial seizures of fronto-temporal origin. Based on literature some "bizarre", aggressive and destructive behaviors, identified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders III-R as criteria for Impulse Control Disorders, may be early indicators of complex partial seizures (Stores, Zawailla, & Bergel, 1991; Monroe, 1989; Williamson, 1992; Weiser, Swartz, Delgado-Escueta, Bancaud, Walsh, Maldonado & Saint-Hilaire, 1992). Little research verifies when conditions emerge, develop and continue during the early and middle childhood life span. The study design was retrospective and correlational with CPSs as the predictor variable and impulsive and/or explosive behaviors as the criterion variables. Participants were parents of children diagnosed with CPSs of fronto-temporal origin between the ages of 4 and 10 years old. Chart review of medical records, EEG studies supporting the diagnosis, the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (VABS) were completed to document parent observations of prediagnostic and current behavioral functioning. Paired t-tests for one tailed significance were calculated on criteria scores of CBCL and VABS and was only found to be statistically significant at the.05 confidence level on the VABS. Paired t-tests for two tailed significance on the VABS revealed statistically significant findings between.001 and.05 for Daily Living compared to Communication and Socialization skills.
