Abstract
Adaptations, Psychological Breast Neoplasms Defense Mechanisms Mammography Mass Screening Personality Problem Solving Clinical Psychology
Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer and a leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the United States (National Cancer Institute, 1996). Mammography is the principle instrument in the detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. Since mammography is crucial in early detection of breast cancer, measures should be taken to reduce the aversiveness of this procedure and make mammography fully accessible to all. In this investigation, problem-solving ability, information, and informational coping style were examined to determine the effects on patient anxiety, for women undergoing their first screening mammogram. A repeated measures analysis was conducted on 52 participants. Results found that information coping style and type of information delivered to participants had no effect on participant anxiety. Additionally, a series of correlations were conducted between social problem-solving ability and anxiety, and information coping style and anxiety. Significant inverse relationships were found between social problem-solving ability and level of anxiety. No relationship was found between information coping style and anxiety. Social problem-solving ability was also found to be a significant predictor of participant anxiety. Furthermore, age of first mammogram recipients was found to be affected by educational level and socioeconomic status. The clinical implications, limitations of this investigation, and directions for future research will be discussed.
